Anointing of the Sick
The Church’s Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick shows Christ’s loving concern for those whose
health is seriously impaired. The sick can recognize that Christ and the Church abide with
them throughout their sickness, even to the point of death.
In uniting themselves with the
passion and death of Christ and the suffering of others throughout the world, the sick can
recognize that their suffering is not without merit, and that it can be a source of blessing
for others.
Since the Second Vatican Council, the faithful have been encouraged to receive this
sacrament at the beginning of a serious illness rather than waiting until death is
imminent. The Sacrament helps the sick person to be united with Christ’s passion, and to
have the courage and peace to endure the suffering. It may bring physical healing if God
so wills, or helps a person prepare for the passage to eternal life, and also forgives sin.
Anyone whose health is seriously impaired by sickness or old age, anyone who is about
to undergo surgery, or anyone who is in need of the special graces of the Anointing of the
Sick is encouraged to receive this Sacrament.
The Anointing of the Sick is always available upon request through the parish
office. Those about to undergo surgery may request the Sacrament before their
hospitalization. There is a communal celebration of the Anointing of the Sick at
a 12:00 noon Mass twice a year, usually in May and
November.
